Spotlight: Cranberry Cove
Our spotlight this week shines on the audiobook of Hailey Piper’s Cranberry Cove, a brooding tale about a haunted hotel, equal parts The Shining and The ENTITY.
Hailey Piper is a Bram Stoker Award-winning author with over 100 short stories published in various publications, including Weird Tales and Pseudopod. Check out here website here.
Piper deftly blends a character study of a transwoman navigating the male-dominated world of organized crime with a tale of a predatory entity that haunts an abandoned hotel. When the son of a crime boss is assaulted at Cranberry Cove, Emberly Hale, is sent to seek retribution. An attack by the supernatural presence that inhabits the hotel sends Emberly on a quest to uncover the origin of the occult threat.
Cranberry Cove really shines with its examination of gender roles, using its supernatural narrative to unpack ideas of what it means to be a woman navigating the ruthless world of organized crime. The haunting narrative deals with uncomfortable themes of sexual assault, but never fails to intrigue and entertain.
On the audiobook side of the things, Jen Lee deftly brings Piper’s narrative to life, effortless invoking an array of characters from criminal henchmen to aging Satanic swingers. Cranberry Cove is available from Bad Hand Books and Amazon. In audiobook format it is available from Audible and Audiobooks.com.
